Winner! Indian Wedding Proposal Story

We absolutely LOVED reading all of your proposal stories that you sent us via e-mail and our Facebook page. Some of you had us smiling from ear to ear while others had us tearing up. It took a lot of deliberation, but we picked our favorite story! The winner of the new book, Indian Weddings by Simran Chawla, is Shikha with this one-of-a-kind proposal story that will have you laughing and saying awww at the same time!

Marriage wasn’t the surprise… the proposal was the SHOCKER!

My then boyfriend and I discussed marriage non-stop, but when I would ask him about wedding plans, he would say, “I don’t have a ring yet, plus I want to make the proposal very special.” In my head all I could think was that I had him and I didn't need a ring or a special proposal.

My boyfriend, now fiancé, had been planning our proposal for over a month. He roped in my parents, cousins and his family. One day I got a call from my cousin saying she wanted to spend the day with me. So she came to work with me and then we went shopping. Well apparently we were supposed to be home by 6:30 and we were still at the mall. So my mom called me and said, “I’m not home and I think I left the oven on, can you get home immediately?” I was wondering how my mother became so careless! Needless to say, we left the mall and ran home.

Normally I pull my car into the garage but this time I parked right in front of my house. As I approached the door, I saw someone duck into one of the bedrooms. I was scared shitless to enter the house, but the oven was on. So I came into the house, screaming “hello!” as if the “burglar” was going to respond. I ran into the kitchen looking for the phone to call 9-1-1 and turn off the oven. As I approached the kitchen I saw red roses leading out to the backyard and on the kitchen counter. I was in a complete daze and the first thought that came to my mind was, “the burglar left us flowers?” Then I noticed my back door unlocked. Again I started wondering how my mother become so careless.

I manned up and headed out to the backyard.  I opened the door and my heart melted. I saw rows of over 200 candles decorating my backyard, rose petals and the man of my dreams wearing a black suit holding a dozen red roses. I walked (ran!) to him and kept repeating “oh my god, oh my god,” while the song Aankhon Mein Teri from 'Om Shanti Om' played in the background. I nearly knocked him over as I rushed into his arms.  He had a beautiful speech planned which unfortunately I remember nothing of as I was so caught up in the moment.

Finally he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He proposed with a red ring pop as we both were still looking for my ring. I said YES and wore my ring pop proudly. We started to dance under the stars until he pulled the rug out from underneath me when he said he was taking me to MAUI the very next day. I packed all night and we got on a flight the next day to celebrate our engagement.

Oh, and for those of you who are curious, the man I saw ducking into the bedroom was my dad. He was so nervous I was going to call the cops!
