The Indian Wedding Trousseau
This is a term that you will become very familiar with during your wedding planning. Luckily it’s one of the best parts! Many brides aren’t familiar with the whole concept so we’ve put together a brief introduction for you.
In the old days, it was the bride’s family’s responsibility to prepare her trousseau that she would take with her to her husband’s home. Many brides would not take any of their old clothes to their new home. It was customary to prepare 11, 21, or sometimes 101 new articles of clothing for the bride. Today some brides keep old traditions alive and others are not as worried about the numbers game.
The trousseau is not limited only to clothing. It also includes accessories ranging from bangles to purses and shoes. Household items such as bed sheets and kitchen utensils may also be included. And of course no bride can forget the new pieces of jewelry.
The trousseau should include both formal and casual Indian outfits. A wide range of lehngas, saris and salwar kameezes should be included for all of the different post-wedding events. You can also spice things up with exotic Indo-Western outfits that are now readily available.
Don’t forget that the trousseau can also include Western wear. Indulge yourself and buy an expensive business suit for work. Also look into a few nice dresses for your honeymoon and future formal Western events. Of course, no bride (or groom) can forget the base of the trousseau – the lingerie. Spend your time choosing the perfect look for your wedding night. Get a variety of lingerie to last through your honeymoon as well.
Many brides in India will often choose a designer and have him/her design all of the clothing for their trousseau. This luxury isn’t readily available to brides in America so it’s perfectly normal to choose outfits by different designers and create your own combination. Use your mom or your best friend to help you shop because this is one time you definitely don’t have to feel guilty about all the spending!
