Purva and David

How many of you remember the movie American Desi? We’re showcasing the wedding of Purva Bedi, the lead actress from the film! Purva has gone on to pursue a number of other roles, but we still think of her as the beautiful Nina from American Desi.

So let’s dive right in to her recent New York wedding with writer, David Stoler; photographed by Ryan Jensen Photography and coordinated by the fabulous team at savvyplanners.com™!

Purva spent the morning of her wedding being pampered as all of you will be. Lucky for her, she was surrounded by her girlfriends, all dressed to perfectly coordinate with her pink sari.

It’s fairly common now to have your bridesmaids dressed in the same sari or suit but with different blouse styles. But this is the first time we are seeing bridesmaids in matching suits AND saris and we love it! What a great way to spice up your bridesmaids’

Who needs a white horse when you can lead your Baraat on a motorcycle! We love how David put his own spin on this traditional Indian ceremony. The best thing about this Baraat has to be the vantage point reserved by the bride and her bridesmaids.

The wedding coordinators at savvyplanners.com™ described this dual “HinjJew” ceremony:

“The ceremony itself was held under a mandap, a Hindu ceremonial canopy that turns the whole area under it into a symbolic altar. This served also as the Jewish chuppah, which symbolizes the bride and groom’s new home. Interestingly, both faiths center around the home, rather than the house of worship, which means that home and altar are very much one and the same.

Purva and David have one of those ‘meeting’ stories that will be re-told over and over in their social circle. The two went out for coffee at a time when Purva was on a six-month boyfriend hiatus. Any guesses as to what happened at the end of that six-month time period? Check out their feature in the New York Times for all the romantic details!

If you’re lucky enough to be planning a wedding around Manhattan, you have some amazing spaces you can transform into the perfect Indian wedding reception. With the exact opposite feel of a hotel ballroom, the venue will definitely be the talk of the town for a while to come.

Bridgewaters, located in South Street Seaport, is definitely a space to consider given its gorgeous views of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Purva and David’s reception used reds, yellows and oranges to create a Fall in New York theme. Some of our favorite details are the yellow taxi on the wedding cake, and the escort cards and table names paying homage to NYC landmarks.

Everything came together beautifully in this celebrity wedding, largely due to the behind-the-scenes work of wedding coordinator Sonia Dhaliwal. Along with the rest of the team in the South Asian division of Savvy Planners, she was able to put together an amazing  team of professionals to create this dream wedding.  Find out more about this team by visiting their website.
