Rinku and Kindi

How They Met

Rinku and Kindi were in the same Calculus class at NYU.  The relationship began naturally and easily when they also realized they had a group of mutual friends.  Rinku still looks fondly back on the memory of getting a B+ after a lot of rigorous studying and Kindi getting an A- with very little effort!  They broke up after dating for 3 years and were reunited at a friend’s wedding 5 years later.  Kindi was excited to pursue Rinku and they began dating again, which eventually led to their engagement!

Pre-Wedding Events

The couple had a Chunni ceremony at Rinku's house under a decorated tent in the backyard with catered food.  The Mehndi ceremony was at a country club on the beach at the Crescent Club in Long Island.  The Sangeet was at Utsav, an Indian Restaurant in downtown New York.  They also had a family barbeque at Rinku's house the day before the wedding, which was fun since they had a lot of guests who traveled from out of state and country for the wedding.

The Wedding

Rinku and Kindi’s wedding was attended by 300 guests from India, Singapore, England and different parts of the U.S. The couple chose to get married in the Gurdwara Rinku had attended since she was a child. It was important for her to get married in a religious place where she had an emotional attachment. Rinku did not want to wear a traditional red outfit and large amounts of jewelry, choosing instead a custom made pink and green wedding dress from New Delhi.  She wanted to keep her make-up very simple as well.  The ceremony, other than that, was very traditional.  Rinku and Kindi had asked the priest to translate certain parts of the ceremony from Punjabi to English.  When he could, he would say the more important parts in both languages to include their friends who did not understand Punjabi.

The Reception

Rinku and Kindi exchanged rings during the reception in front of their friends and family. They chose a colorful, vibrant color scheme since the reception was held during the summer.  Rinku wanted to make sure the reception was just about having fun and not scripted in any way.  They decided against having any performances or talent shows from friends or family.  They wanted a relaxed atmosphere where people would dance all night!  They chose The Bourne Mansion as their reception venue because of the beautiful and grand outdoor area, as well as the large dance floor inside.  Guests felt free to move in and out, which led to a great carefree energy throughout the night.  Their first dance was to 'I Belong to You' by Lenny Kravitz.  After a minute of dancing they invited all of the guests to join them.

Bridal Wisdom

"Don't worry about pleasing everyone.  Design your wedding so that you, and those closest to you, are happy.  Be true to yourself and don't get too carried away comparing your wedding to anyone else's.  One of the best decisions I made was to set up a tent and have functions at my house.  It was where I grew up and it felt really warm and special to have all of my friends and family come over to celebrate there.  We wanted everything to feel as personal as possible.  The only thing I would do differently is to have some of my closest friends wear different dresses in a matching color, creating a casual bridal party.  This would have been really cute for photos and also handy for picking them out in the crowd!"
