Puerto Rico is a convenient, tropical destination with an extensive list of activities, resorts and beaches.  The region offers lodging on both ends of the cost spectrum.  It offers a plethora of activities for the adventure-seeking Indiana Jones types, to the sun-soaking beach bums.  Given that it is a U.S. territory, U.S. citizens and permanent residents will not have to deal with any hassles of visas and immigration.

When to Go

While the temperature is certainly warm and pleasant year around, like all other Caribbean destinations, Puerto Rico is exposed to the hurricane season in that region.  The peak of the hurricane season is typically in September and October.

Where to Stay

The most popular regions to visit in Puerto Rico are Old San Juan, Isla Verde and Fajardo.  Old San Juan has several renovated historical buildings that have been made into hotels.  Staying in this area will put you near all the shopping, trendy restaurants and packed bars.  The most popular hotel in this area is El Convento, a restored 1615 building in the heart of the city.  Try to see if Room 508 is available and also be sure to check out the pool on the 4th floor and the breath-taking views from there.

Located right by the airport, Isla Verde is the most developed of the popular regions in Puerto Rico with several large, posh resorts on a beautiful stretch of beach.  The most popular resort on this strip is El San Juan Hotel.  The casino is always crowded and buzzing, the pool is beautiful with full gardens, and the hotel offers a great diversity of cuisines.  For those who have spent too much on their weddings and need to skimp on the honeymoon, Casa de Playa Beach Hotel is a well-priced, modest hotel that is located on a beautiful beach amongst many of these luxurious resorts.

The place to stay in Fajardo without a question would be Wyndham’s El Conquistador Resort & Country Club.  The 500 acre resort makes available an endless number of recreational activities, from a beautiful golf course to its own small island for amazing snorkeling.  The resort also has its Las Casitas Village, which are beautifully appointed villas.  If you’re searching for paradise on a budget, be sure to explore the inns on the islands of Culebra and Viques, accessible by ferry from Farjardo.  These islands are far from commercialized and offer a quaint, romantic setting.

What to See

El Yunque is the only rainforest north of the equator with several paths, some leading up to beautiful waterfalls.  Plan on taking swimming gear and a towel – it’s definitely worth taking a dip in the refreshing pools of the waterfalls.  This location is about 45 minutes from San Juan. 

When you visit Old San Juan get a guide and map to help lead you to all the several historic locations.  Be sure that El Morro is on your agenda for the day.  Remember to wear comfortable shoes because there is a lot to see and it’s best seen on foot.  This is also the best area to get in all your shopping – there are several souvenier shops, ethnic boutiques, as well as your well known global brands.

Even if you don’t decide to stay on one of the islands off of Fajardo, it is definitely worth arranging a day trip out there.  Plan on doing some snorkeling, soaking in the sun on isolated white sand beaches and eating at a quaint little restaurant.

Where to Eat

In Old San Juan, our pick would definitely be trendy hotspot Dragonfly.  The restaurant features a creative Latin and Asian fusion menu, the décor is modern and romantic, and the service is great.

In Isla Verde, if you’re not staying at El San Juan, be sure to take the opportunity to dine there.  This will give you a great opportunity to check out the buzzing nightlife and beautifully appointed hotel, while enjoying a gourmet meal.

Similarly in Fajardo, whether or not you are staying at El Conquistador Resort, be sure to dine at one of its many impeccable dining options.
