Tips for Flying

Chances are you’ll be flying in order to get to your honeymoon destination. Some of you may be seasoned flyers but others may be nervous about the journey. Go over these tips before you get ready to leave in order to minimize your stress about flying and ensure you have a comfortable trip.

  • Dress in layers on your flight as it may get cool on the plane but be scorching hot once you get off and are welcomed to your island destination.

  • Be sure to keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water on the plane. Keep a couple bottles of water with you in case you get thirsty before the flight attendant gets to you!

  • If you are extremely nervous about the flight, talk to your doctor in advance and ask him to prescribe some medication that will make the flight easier for you.

  • Bring magazines and a novel to keep yourself occupied if you’re going on a long flight. Novels are best if you’re a fast reader or if you’re nervous about the flight. If you’re the type of person who feels carsick when reading in a car, a magazine may be a better option. Playing cards are also a great way to pass the time together. And if you’re really motivated, take some thank you cards with you and start writing!

  • Expect a bit of turbulence during your flight if you are flying during a season of inclement weather. Rest assured that it is only temporary and that the captain will keep you updated regarding the duration and the cause.

  • If the airline you are traveling with does not provide a meal during your flight - JetBlue and Southwest are examples - remember to keep snacks with you and eat before the flight. Even if you are not taking a long flight you should account for any delays once on the plane.

  • Bring an mp3 player with you to pass some time and also drown out some of the noise from the plane. Make sure you fill your mp3 player with a variety of songs. Bring two if you anticipate arguing over who gets to listen to music!

  • Bring a laptop if you’re a workaholic and need to take care of things. Just make sure you put away all work-related material once you check in to your hotel!

  • A portable DVD player is a great idea for extended flights. This may not be necessary if you have individual TV screens on your airplane seats. Bring 2 Hindi movies with you and 6 hours will be gone before you know it (don’t forget the extra batteries)!

  • Bring a pillow with you as sitting for a long period of time can lead to back and neck pain. This is especially important if taking an overnight flight so you can sleep more comfortably. If you want, bring your own blanket as it will get cooler on the plane.

  • Make sure you take breaks from sitting to walk up and down the aisle of the plane. Stretching while you’re sitting will also help your body from becoming cramped. If your flight has connections, spend your free time walking around and stretching instead of sitting down.
